Tom Quick

Mason/Lewis/Shearston

In the town of Milford, Pennsylvania
There stands a sorry sign
'Helps passing strangers understand
Pike County's frame of mind

"Tom Quick" it says,
" the indian slayer of legendary fame lived in this region"
Where he played a hero's game
He was angered by the slaying of his father
Who had been a pioneer (and you know what that word means)

An indian, no doubt put-out, to lose his burying ground
Apparently went all the way
When Tom Quick's dad he found
For miles and miles and miles around
The taking over life itself

And I  feel the old world dying
Spread-eagled on the wall
And up and down the pathways
You may hear the signposts call
The world is standing, my friend
On it's ear
Just for listening for the fall

For forty years, the remainder of his life
Tom Quick killed and killed avenging wrong for right
And etched in golden letters
On that blue-black history side
The tally of Tom Quick's legend is written: 99

But I  feel the old world dying
Spread-eagled on the wall
And up and down the pathways
You may hear the signposts call
The world is standing, my friend
On it's ear
Just for listening for the fall

In the town of Milford, Pennsylvania
There stands a sorry sign
To help passing strangers
Understand the fraying of their minds...
