Noel, whatever happened to the tablit (sic)? From the points of view accorded by 25 years of unscratched curiosity, I now suspect that it might have been an early version of the e-book.
Hello! On the way to your concert with Peter Yarrow on Saturday, March 23 in Monterey, upon arriving to the gate, I noticed a tall man in front of me waiting to leave the plane. He was toting what looked to me like a banjo case. I commented to my wife and sister that this man may be "in the band" supporting you and your partner. Standing at the baggage claim, I got a good look at this guy and told my companions "I think that's Noel Stookey!", but out of context (not on the stage and not with his partner), we weren't quite sure.
Of course, the moment we saw you at the theatre from our front-row seats we all knew we had actually caught a glimpse of you! We hoped the entire weekend that we would run into you in Monterey just to say "thanks".
Your concert with Peter Yarrow was amazing. We have never seen you before in person and am so happy we did. The music you played unfortunately holds its relevance. Thank you for your music, your relevance, and your teaching. If you're ever in Orange County, California, look me up--I won't make the mistake of not recognizing you again!
Dear Noel- I don't know if you remember me or not, but you gave me the thrill of my life when I came to your studio in Rye.NY to record a jingle for registering the 18 yr old vote. I was an avid folkie as a child, and meeting you was a huge honor. Not long after I recorded in your studio, I moved to San Francisco. One of the first musicians I worked with there was a guy named Barry Flast. You can't imagine my surprise when I saw a picture of him playing with you on tour, along with Cam Kotler, whose home we stayed in when we recorded at your studio. I have had a long career as a studio and live performer, and have gone on to perform with David Bromberg, Huey Lewis and the News, and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, who I performed with in concert with the Marin Symphony. Thank you for your kindness to that young girl who recorded in your studio ( my brother Jon, also recorded with us that day, he's an amazing bassist and musician and I try to not hold that against him. )
Hi Noel Paul, I was born in 1950 and first heard the music of Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963 in my Junior High auditorium in Mason City, Iowa. From that moment on I have followed you and your group, loving every song you sand and/or wrote. I was a decent musician--fllute, piccolo and alto flute but when God was handing out voicies and good ears, I wasn't in line. But when I'm alone and playing your music, I sing along since I won't offend anyone but my chihuahuas who sometimes howl. Thank you all for sharing your gifts. I'm sure we all miss Mary and I pray she is at peace. You were all very gifted and thanks for sharing your gifts with us, the people of America and the world.
Dear Paul,
I am not sure, if you remember me. I invited you to a concert in Salzburg, Austria in the year 2001. It should have been a surprise to my good friend Tom Preston. You planned to go to Greece with your wife and then come to Salzburg, but then you had another concert sceduled and had to postpone it. After that we lost contact and I changed plans to come to one of your concerts in the US instead. Now I found the old emails and I started to make plans to surprise Tom now and take him to see you in June in Terrytown Hall concert. But Tom is a retired pastor and has a wedding on that weekend. I hope you will still be doing concerts, so that this dream could become true still. If not its a good story anyway. All the best to you, and thank you for the music, that we are still listening to and singing. Tom still has a poster in his leaving room, showing PPM and saying "Gods Grace is gentle." Love & Peace Gernot
Mr. Stookey, LOVE your songs. Especially love Building Block. We'd like to use it in a worship service in Japn in a week or two. How can we write to ask permission or to pay royalties for singing this in church and posting the lyrics on a Powerpoint Slide?
I just want to say THANK YOU for all the beautiful music I’ve been blessed to know and hear over the course of my 54 years. You, Peter and Mary came to me at a young tender age with Puff, and have stayed with my my entire life. I hear your songs in my head even when I’m doing the smallest and mundane of chores. I hear you. And I thank you for lifting me up always. So I had to tell you.
“For whenever two or more of you is gathered in his name” has been in my mind for weeks and weeks. So much so that I sought out your page and see I am delighted to be able to leave a comment , so I’m letting you know that I can hear you singing Matthew 18:20 as I am struggling through a very difficult time. I am sure it is a divine sign to get me through it all. So I just wanted to tell you that when I read or think of the passage, I hear it in your harmony singing it to me verses my own voice reading it.
Thank you and Bless you.
A much belated birthday greeting to you. Thank you for the inspiring example you set of humaness and generosity. It has been a joy to share news of you and PPM with my students. Are you planning any performances in New England in 2024? Thank you.
Hello, I just wanted to come on here and tell you how much your music has inspired me as a musician. I believe the self titled Peter Paul and Mary album is among the greatest albums of all time. songs like Cruel War and of course Where Have All The Flowers Gone, are truly beautiful and amazingly meaningful songs, and in so many ways i feel songs like this and messages that were represented in the songs of Peter Paul and Mary are what is missing from the world, and what the world really needs. So I wanted to thank you truly for being a great inspiration to me. I also wanted to tell you that I am going to the show in Tarrytown, NY in June!
PS I hope you are able to visit Germany in the near future. Someplace in the depths of the Erzgebirge Mountains in a village called Leubsdorf. We have a cultural center that needs your music to encourage the community and support our newly emerging international society :)
I enjoy your Substack. Thanks for sharing.
I grew up with PP&M. In my late teens and early 20`s I saw the band three times in California. Your words of justice and love toward individuals is what inspire me.
I did not know in the 70´s after you found L is when the band stopped touring. I wholeheartedly thank you for coming back together and singing and making music.
Noel
Just want to say ‘hi’.
In 1974 (my senior year at Rutgers college) I wrote to you thru your record company.
I became a Christian in summer of ‘72 and was aghast at the divide on campus between “Spirit-filled” people and more conservative types. The schism was dramatic… and disgraceful.
I asked IF you might be willing to come and help heal the schism. When I returned from Easter break, I had a message from your secretary (Beryl?), “You have a concert” on such-n-such a date.
You were so gracious to come and sing and speak to the students there. We held the concert at the Douglass College chapel - - afraid that the Rutgers Chapel wouldn’t be large enough.
Thank you for doing so much to try to heal the divide. I hope it was a good experience for you.
I’m now 71 yrs old and live in CO and can hardly believe where the years have gone. I am still radically concerne' vsd for the Body of Christ.
May we both strive to make His Name known to a list and dying world. Blessings to you.
Tim
Hello Paul (now using Noel)
I am Nancy Berger Slusher, your former dentist,Charles Berger's daughter.
I have fond memories of listening to the "45" of Puff the Magic Dragon which you gave my father ....way back! When packing up my parent's home I came across 2 pictures of the group which you signed with your personal note: "To Doc" and "To the Berger's". I also found a letter you sent him when you were already settled in Maine (Great choice for a home,in my opinion)
I have tickets for your performance at Cerritos Performing Arts Center this April...
I now live in Southern California. I would really enjoy meeting up with you to say, "Hello" either before or after your performance.
Greetings Noel,
I stumbled a moment ago when doing the math that informs me I'm a 60+ year fan! I should add, a lucky 60 year fan too. My music adventure began playing tuba in the school band for 5 years. No one ever invited me to their parties and asked me to bring it along, so I switched to guitar then met a friend who knew many of the PPM songs. Today, still pickin and grinnin now and then, I'm asked to perform at a friends coffee shop when they put in a stage. I'm thinking "Right Field" and "Somos el Barco' for sure. The added joy for me will be the reactions from the 20 somethings when introduced to those gifts. Sincere thanks for the many joys, memories, tears and smiles. I'm blessed to travel these times with you. Be Always Blessed, Curt
I heard again, as I often hear your music on my playlists, "El Salvador". Forty-two years later, and we are still there...
By Grace, may the Orange Idiot be ineligible for the Office he seeks.
You are 15 years ahead of me...it feels too much like the 60s & 70s.
Thank you for decades of music.
Hi Noel, I just watched your interview on YouTube called "John Fischer Discusses the Jesus Movement with Noel Paul Stookey." I loved your remark concerning how metaphors and parables in song lyrics "allow you to paint a picture for a lot more people because the entry point is not barred with preconceptions." But to be perfectly honest, later in the video, from roughly minute 25 through 27, I think it would be fair to paraphrase you as saying that using Jesus' name is basically how babies speak. Adults speak of "the Divine" which is "Love with a capital L". I love your gracious spirit, but I'm concerned that this kind of "sweet theology" doesn't do justice to the biblical message of salvation. Whatever became of Acts 4:12 and so many other verses where the early church proclaimed there's "no other name by which we must be saved"? You spoke of looking for "authentic" Christianity, yet the repeated pattern of the Book of Acts and the rest of the New Testament — i.e. authentic Christianity — shows that to truly reach a lost and hurting world, folks need to hear about Jesus. You mentioned in your interview the couple who came to you after a concert and said they had "a word of the Lord for you," namely, that you shouldn't use Jesus' name. But how does that square with the revealed (i.e. written) Word of God? If ever there was a time in the world when people need to hear the wonderful Name that led so many of us to salvation back in the 70's, it's now. I hope you won't be offended by my saying all this. I would surely have preferred to sit down over a cup of coffee and shared this heart-to-heart rather than through your website portal :-) The plain gospel message is "the power of God unto salvation" according to Rom. 1:16. Living in a kind and giving way is certainly part of our testimony, but Scripture has so much to say about WORDS being vital to communicating the gospel to the lost. Perhaps a musical metaphor would be fitting. "If the bugle produces an indistinct sound", how will people know how to respond? (1 Cor. 14:8) To tell people that Jesus was the Lamb of God who died for our sins — versus merely speaking of "the Divine" and of "Love" — would be so very helpful to the multitudes you have unique opportunity to connect with. I love you dear friend. I still remember a great many years ago when you came to Rutgers to do a concert and gave all the proceeds to our Christian fellowship. Thanks for reading this message, Noel, and also for your gracious spirit.
P.S. Writing this message to you in your website's "Guestbook" is the only way I could think of to contact you. My message, as you can tell, is certainly a personal one. If you wish to post it publicly, that's fine, but I'll certainly understand if not. To edit its message, however, prior to posting, would likely distort what I was trying to share with you in a thoughtful way. Thus, I'd prefer it not be posted if it is going to be posted in a partial format. Thanks for understanding :-)
Hi Noel Paul!!
I saw you at the Tarrytown Music Hall on November 17 2023 when you graciously gave a free show, because the 1st show was rained out, and this show, Peter was in contact with someone with COVID. That was so sweet of you to still do the show, for free, no less!!!!!
You gave an unbelievable performance!!!!
I was so amazed and in awe of you!!!!
Your performance was spectacular!
Since, no tickets were required, my friend and I arrived at 5 PM, we were the first to arrive. We were able to get seats in the 3rd row. Unfortunately, it was not 1st come first serve but, who ran the fastest, which we were, lol.
But, the seats were fantastic!!!! I could easily see your expressions!!
This concert was one of the best things that happened to me in my 63 years of life!!!!
It was an experience like no other!!!! I am forever grateful to you for sharing this ultimate experience. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!! I so look for reward to seeing you again, with Peter, at the end of June!!! You are a blessing to all those you come in contact with!!!! I thank you for being the wonderful person you are!!!! Only the best to you!!!! Love, JoMarie
Hi Paul, I had a friend wishing you a Happy Birthday and tagged me asking if we are related. LOL. My dad Gridley Kristen Stookey use to talk about you. He was from Pennsylvania along with our Stookey Clan. Do you remember our side of the family? I see your birthname is Noel Carol Stookey. Funny right? I'm wishing you a Happy Birthday and hope all is well with you. Thank you for all your entertainment you provided everyone for all these years.
Hugs Carol
Happy Birthday Noel! And Happy New Year to you and your family! Thank you for all the work you have done throughout your life, which goes beyond the great music you have created. You are truly an inspiration to many generations and many more to come.
I discovered your music, along with PP&M, a few years ago in college (I'm 24); and you have become one of the greatest inspirations in my life. My personal favorite song of yours is 'Country Song'!
I am actually from Cerritos, CA so I'm hoping to be able to finally see you and Peter perform here in April! Also, my grandparents live in Ojai and we were surprised to read in the local news awhile ago that this little town is a place of refuge for you from those northeastern winters!
God bless you, may your heart always be joyful, may your song always be sung, and may you stay forever young!
Wishing you the best,
- David M
Happy Birthday Mr. Stookey!
May your every wish be granted,
And may all your dreams come true.
May your birthdays remain enchanted,
And happiness come looking for you.
God bless you, Noel Paul.
