Dear Mr. Stookey, If I had realized that there was a way to say thank you prior to reading about the passing of Peter Yarrow, I would have sent this much earlier. So, thank you so very much for the music and for all the joy. My entire generation is indebted to you, and is so very lucky to have lived in a time where your music was available. Your music, specifically the Peter, Paul and Mommy album, was the first I ever heard, and will always be my favorite. (I still own the record). What a rare and lucky thing to have had your beautiful music grace our lives. It should not be taken as a sign of less appreciation that until my 30s, I thought the words to Puff the Magic Dragon included the words “vanished in the ottomist.” What a surprise to read “autumn mist” so many years later. To be fair, if you can have Honah Lee, “ottomist” makes perfect sense. We never questioned your magic, or the lyrics. Our lives would have been so much less joyful, especially dealing with the increasingly devastating losses of our adult lives (a functioning planet, democracy, and the normal griefs of aging), if we were not able to hold on to your music and its meaning. That we can look back in gratitude for your gifts and continue to find joy in your music is a serious thing in a world that increasingly works to destroy both joy and beauty. You have made the world not only better for having been in it, which is rare, but have made it more beautiful, which is much harder. As it turns out, Puff was right. Getting older comes with the awareness and experience of loss. But as the song also makes clear, the magic remains. And as you wrote perfectly in the Wedding Song, love does indeed both bring us here and bring us life. Your music brought us love and magic in equal measure. There is no way to say thank you adequately in words for something that can’t be expressed by mere words. Thank you anyway. Thank you forever. PS. I don’t know where the magic dragon cave is located, but I bet there is some great music happening there.

karen! thanks for the great PUFF review! and yes somewhere, in some mythical living room, surely there must exist a amorphous piece of furniture called an 'ottomist'

Hi Noel , First of all , I want to send my deepest condolences to you on the passing of the one and only Peter Yarrow . I don't know if you remember , but I am the millennial who saw you and Peter at both concerts at the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley , California in December of 2018. I attended both meet and greet sessions prior to the concerts and then got to spend time with you both backstage . Liz took a picture of the three of us together . I had told both of you that I had been a fan of Peter , Paul , and Mary for 25 years having grown up on the Peter , Paul , and Mommy Too PBS special , but I had never gotten a chance to see you in concert with Mary or meet her before she died . You told me that Mary would have been "pleased and proud " that I had remained a fan of The Trio from 5 years old to 30 years old . Peter kept raving about what a beautiful voice I had because you both could hear me singing loudly from the front row . I hope you know how much the two of you forever changed my life and made a difference in making my Peter , Paul , and Mary dreams come true those two magical nights ! I also hope this is not goodbye and that God willing we will see each other again so that I can have one last chance to hug you and thank you in person for granting my wishes ! You , Peter , and Mary have made my life so wonderful and I love you all dearly for it ! You've just got to believe , cuz believing is what makes it happen .And I always knew I'd find you , but I never did know how . But like sunshine on a cloudy day , you stand before me now . Love always and forever from your biggest fan, Jonathan King , 36 Hayward , California

I have two numbers in my iPhone. “Peter1” and “Peter2.” Your partner told me if I couldn’t reach him with the first number, to try the second. I’m not in the music business. And no, I wasn’t a leader in the peace movement. There is nothing special about me. All I did was write him a letter a few years ago after I heard him sing on the radio, along with your and Mary: “Have you been to jail for justice? I’d like to shake your hand.” I told him no, I’ve never been to jail for justice. Even when others were crossing the police line at the San Jose Hyatt where Henry Kissinger was speaking at a dentists’ convention, I was too afraid I’d lose my teaching job. But now that I was retired, maybe there was still some time left to get in some “good trouble.” And then maybe we could shake hands? I told him we actually did shake hands once before, after a concert in 1970 at the Civic Auditorium when he gleefully broke federal law by defacing my draft card with his autograph. But I’d really like the honor to shake his hand again. I also thanked him for how his music helped me make the difficult decision at age 18 to check the box on the last page of my draft registration papers that I could not in good conscious kill another human being. My decision was also difficult for my parents who grew up in a time when there was such a thing as a good war. I didn’t expect a response to my letter, but I got one. He addressed me as “Brother Robert” and told me to call him anytime. But he had already given me a lot more time and attention than I deserved and the last thing I wanted to do was take advantage of his generous spirt. I felt like I should be doing him a favor, not the other way around. So I never called. And now I can’t even if I wanted to. But I’m holding onto the numbers, and the memory, and the inspiration, and the desire to shake anyone’s hand if they’ve ever been to jail for justice, or even if they just gave it some serious thought.

Dear Noel, it must be a bit strange to be receiving hundred of notes from total strangers, as well intended as we all are. That being said, many of us grew up with your music… Peter, Paul and Mary’s message for the ages. It was life changing. And brings many fond memories to mind. It was the first record album my parents allowed me to buy. It was the very first concert I attended (along with my mom). The conversations she and I had about the civil rights movement and all the causes you, Pater and Mary stood for and wrote about in terms we understood. But today is not about my memories. It is about yours and what life was like, what friendship and brotherhood was like with Peter. I am sending my deepest sympathy to you, your family and Peter’s family on this sad day. I looked at his website and saw the picture of you sitting by his bed, just last month, reading to him from your memoirs. The look on his face, his hand barely touching your arm gave me a very clear idea of the lifelong brotherhood you shared. Life is never the same after losing a brother. But I pray that God wraps you all in His loving embrace and brings you peace as you walk the path of your grief. Many blessings to you, Noel Paul

Dear Mr Stookey, I read today's news in a public bakery with deep sadness and suddenly burst into tears. I sat there and wrote this poem, which I would like to give to you. (I hope the translation is understandable.) From one Christian to another. I wish you much strength and confidence. Translation: Peter goes to Mary The sky is full of violins. Rising from earthly spheres traces of an erstwhile circle to the world after the end, to whom one turns, when the earthly voices remain silent. So becomes heaven's own who bow to death on earth and appears in the choir of angels. And it rings even more beautiful to those who sing the praises of heaven and forever branch off themselves endless. („The sky is full of violins.“ means in German: to be in a very depressed mood → Sky & Heaven are the same in German)

Dear Noel (Or do you prefer "Paul"? 'Course, that's how I knew ya.), First, my heart ached for Mary. Now, for Peter. No doubt, my feelings and memories are little different than other fans'. But I'll say, anyway, I have a wistful ache in my chest as I'm taken back to a time so many years ago which, for a moment, seems not so distant. Your music was poignant, gentle and hopeful amidst many a more forceful sound - no less vital to the times. Comforting, that's what it was. Yet there was no doubting your convictions as strong as anyone's, evidenced where and when you (3) added your presence and voices to the nobel causes then, which sadly remain mirrored today. As I think of that, I hear your voices in my head making me feel young, again, a smile now, and a reaffirmed conviction that those ideals remain valid, are worth holding, and the smallest of efforts toward kindness and compassion and justice are never futile. Thank you, the three of you.

My condolences and great sadness that the legend, Peter Yarrow, has passed away. He was scheduled to play for us at the Milford Performance Center this past December however his Cancer took an unfortunate turn. On a personal note Puff The Magic Dragon is one of my daughter, Hannah Leigh's, favorite songs since childhood, which I recorded for her as an infant over 44 years ago. Almost 50 years ago I had the chance, with several classmates, to sing "Puff" with you at Portchester HS in NY. I hope to bump into you on my next trip to Ojai to visit my brother. I hope he and Mary are making beautiful music together once again and frolicking in the autumn mist with Jackie Paper. RIP PETER. 😢 Steve Cooper

Mr. Stookey: I send you my deepest condolences on the loss of your friend, Peter Yarrow. I feel the loss as well, as I did with Mary. I was a folkie through the 60's - I turned pro at 14 (I'm now 77). The Weavers, Bob Gibson, Joan Baez all influenced me, but Peter, Paul and Mary by far had the greatest influence. Thank you for all you have done - as a group and individually. Again, my condolences - To everything, turn, turn, turn, there is a season, turn, turn, turn - his life, indeed yours and Mary's have served your muse and humanity most graciously. I am completely thankful. All best, Dr. Warren Fremling

Paul, I heard the news about Peter late tonight. I have been a fan of Peter, Paul, & Mary for most of my life, and I know that Puff is crying tonight in his cave. My heart is broken by the loss of Peter, but I will always remember the music that the three of you shared with all of us. You are in my thoughts and prayers tonight for your loss. I'm also keeping Peter's family in my prayers tonight. I don't know if I will ever meet you in person, but I'm honored to know you through your music.

I’m writing to let you know I am praying for you this week. In high school, I found a copy of the Peter, Paul, and Mary in Concert LP, and it opened my ears to the value of sincere, intimate music. Now, I have shared those songs with my five children, and they can often be found singing Lemon Tree or 500 Miles around the house. Your music has and continues to bring this home joy and laughter. Sincerely, AJH

Dear Noel, I have been a fan of PPM since my teen years, now in my 70’s I find your music more important than ever. I am so very sorry for the passing of Peter and for the pain and loss you must be experiencing. I am experiencing a very strange thing as I could swear that you announced his passing earlier and had an online memorial page. My best friend even called to ask me if I had not told her much earlier of his passing. Am I going crazy? Was it possibly a premonition? Although Peter has passed I am continuing to look to you for the motivating, inspiring and poignant music this country and world needs. Again my sincere condolences.

Dear Mr. Stookey; Please add my tiny single voice to the legions of family, friends and fans expressing their sympathy and sorrow over the passing of Mr. Yarrow. There aren't enough words in the dictionary to adequately convey my feelings of heartbreak and loss for Mr. Yarrow as a life-long friend and partner to you, and all the rest of the music world as well. Like many of his fans who have written to him and about him of late, he will be remembered and cherished as a "Good Guy." And sometimes, being a "Good Guy" is the very best eulogy that any man can earn in his lifetime! The most comforting thought I can leave you with is from the book of Hebrews; 'Blessed are those who entain strangers, for they may unawares, entertain angels.' (Just imagine how many angels crossed Mr. Yarrow's path on his road to Paradise!) My little young son will be there, now standing tall and strong inside the pearly gates, ready to bid him 'Welcome!' (And thanks for the music!) Until we all meet again, may all blessings be yours, my friend and my brother. - James Rupert

Dear Noel, My profound condolences to you for the passing away of Peter I just heard on national news. I was honored to meet him when he said in humor to me when asking my name: "Sundquist, that sounds like a nice Jewish name!" We attend Rabbi Irving Salzman's Beth Messiah Congregation and sometime lead worship there. I will forever be grateful for your counsel and and helping me produce my first record album Freedom Flight. May the “God of ALL comfort” comfort you! "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.” 2 Corinthians 1:3 You will no doubt sing and play guitar at Peter's Memorial Service. Finally, I invite you to hear and even share my song “You Are Worth It All” https://www.eaglemasterworksproductions.com/you-are-worth-it-all-excerpt.html Shalom, James Sundquist

Good afternoon Paul, with the tragic news of the passing of Peter, you are the last remaining member of the famed trio, I grew up listening to all the songs you all did and they were all amazing, the loss of first Mary and now Peter, it is heartbreaking to think that at any time we can lose the entire trio. You and your family will forever be in my thoughts and as well the family of Peter too.
