Waiting For Angels
(by Noel Paul Stookey and Douglas Jessop)
Let's all go to the movies
Something to brighten our day
There's one at the Grand
That sounds kind of romantic
At least that's what some critics say
She was an empty bottle blond with broken baby dreams He was a handsome never was with no ends and no means Maybe she was a Marilyn, maybe he was an Elvis
Meeting in the city, waiting for angels
She said we should run away and join a different circus Everyone needs tragic clowns living without purpose With our perfect sadness, it's us against them
The rubes are there for taking, they’re waiting for angels Waiting for angels, waiting for angels
The carnival stalled in Kansas when the little top fell down So they settled in together in a truck stop trailer town Raised their glasses bravely, sure their luck would change Out on a concrete prairie, waiting for angels
This is the part in the movie
Where truth and hope start to bend
But you hold on tight in the flickering light
To see how it's going to end
Glasses on the tables. stools back on the floor
She wipes down the bar and reaches for the door
Wonders if the salesman will come again tonight
Wonder if he knows, she's waiting for angels
The house is dark and empty, his key turns in the lock On the bedside table, her note beside the clock
In the drawer below, a bible and a gun
He hears the rush of wings, waiting for angels
Waiting for angels, waiting for angels
Let's all go to the movies
Something to brighten our day
